Using a Multimeter Safely Around Vintage Stereo Equipment
A multimeter is useful, but the most important measurement is the one you know is safe to make.

Begin with low-risk checks
Use a meter first for simple, unplugged checks such as confirming a detached speaker cable is not shorted. Read the meter manual and inspect probes for cracked insulation, loose tips, or damaged leads before use.
Never try to measure mains voltage or internal amplifier voltages just because a guide mentions them. Vintage equipment can retain dangerous charge after being unplugged and can expose lethal voltages when open.
- Use the correct meter function and jack before touching probes to anything.
- Keep fingers behind the probe guards.
- Remove rings, watches, and loose jewelry before any bench work.
Stop at the limits of the guide
Bias adjustment, DC-offset measurement, power-supply diagnosis, and live internal troubleshooting require model-specific documentation, suitable equipment, and experience. A qualified technician is the right next step if those procedures are needed.
